Blackthorn – Prunus spinosa

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a hardy, fast-growing native species and thrives well in mixed hedgerows. Delicate white blossoms on bare branches appear in early spring, then comes into leaf in summer. Dark green leaves create a natural screen, while in autumn, deep purple sloes appear which can be used to make gin or eaten as they are.

Blackthorn hedging provides a prickly barrier requiring minimal maintenance. It is a hardy plant, but prefers full sun.
