Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is a non-native invasive perennial plant which arrived in the UK in the 1800’s and was used as an ornamental garden plant. Since then it has spread rapidly and has no natural predators in the UK, such as insect pests, fungi or bacteria.
There are strict laws in the UK which are designed to protect the environment from non-native invasive plants. Whilst its not illegal to have have Japanese Knotweed on your land, you must stop it from spreading into the wild or onto someone else’s land by law. Japanese Knotweed or the the soil where it is growing is classified as Controlled Waste and cannot be removed from any site without special permissions.
Having an infestation of Japanese Knotweed growing on a property could adversely effect it’s value and may prevent a mortgage from being obtained. However, this may be overcome if a guaranteed treatment plan is in place by a qualified contractor.
